Ipsos is a multinational market research organization headquartered in Paris, France. It was founded by Didier Truchot in 1975 and has been publicly traded on the Paris Stock Exchange since 1999. Today the firm is one of the top three market research agencies globally, in the same league as Nielsen and Kantar. It offers a range of solutions for its clients, such as audience measurement, mystery shopping, polling and customer experience studies.
Ipsos’ success is the result of a combination of expansion and research. Its initial success stemmed from its ability to serve media and advertising companies. The company developed instruments to measure advertising effectiveness. In 1977, it developed the Barometre d’Affichage (BAF), a study that analyzed the effectiveness of billboard advertising. It was followed by an instrument designed to gauge the reading habits of French executives. Throughout the 1990s, Ipsos expanded its services into other areas of the world, including South America, the United Kingdom, and Central Europe.
